After configuring categories and keywords, the next important step is refining your Scanner using filters to target ideal projects that match your agency's capabilities and requirements. This guide covers each filtering option to help you achieve more precise search results.

In this guide:

Job Duration Preferences

Set your preferred project scope to match your agency's capacity and availability.

Project Length & Workload

Project Length allows you to define the timeline that works best for your team's schedule and project planning.

Hourly Workload lets you specify the expected weekly hours to ensure projects align with your team's availability and current commitments.

Contract-to-Hire Options

If your agency is interested in long-term partnerships that could evolve into permanent arrangements, you can filter for Contract-to-Hire Roles that offer full-time potential.

ℹ️ By default, all jobs are shown. Check the box to filter only contract-to-hire opportunities.

Budget Preferences

Set rate limits and filter based on budget, hire rate, pay, and Connects cost to ensure projects meet your financial requirements.

Rate Settings

Use Min Hourly Rate and Min Fixed Price to define minimum acceptable rates that align with your agency's pricing structure and ensure profitability.

πŸ’‘ We recommend not setting maximum rate limits, as this could exclude potentially valuable high-budget projects that exceed your expectations.

The Include Jobs with Unspecified Budget option expands results to include jobs without listed budgets, which may represent opportunities where clients are flexible on pricing.

ℹ️ By default, jobs with no budget are hidden. Check to include them.

Client Hire Rate & Hourly Rate History

Client Hire Rate shows how often clients actually hire from their posted jobs. For example, 50% means they've hired for half of their posted jobs, indicating their seriousness about filling positions.

Average Hourly Rate Paid helps you target jobs based on what clients typically pay, focusing on those whose budget expectations align with your rates.

The system also allows you to Include Clients without Hire Rate or Hourly Rate History.

πŸ’‘ We recommend activating both options to avoid missing new, potentially promising clients who could become valuable long-term partners.

ℹ️ By default, clients without hire rate or hourly rate history are hidden. Check to include them.

Application Costs

Connects Price filtering helps you manage your application budget by allowing you to set limits on how many Connects you're willing to spend per application.

Client Preferences

Filter clients based on different criteria to ensure you're targeting reputable and suitable clients for your services.

Client Reputation

Upwork Rating allows you to choose clients based on their 1–5 star reputation, giving you the flexibility to work only with clients whose feedback aligns with your comfort level.

πŸ’‘ We recommend setting the Upwork Rating filter to 4 stars or higher. This helps you focus on clients with strong reputations and increases the likelihood of a positive and smooth collaboration.

You can also choose to Include Clients with no Feedback to expand opportunities to new or infrequent clients who haven't yet established feedback histories but may offer valuable opportunities.

ℹ️ By default, clients with no feedback are hidden. Check to include them.

Total Spent & Payment

Min Total Spent filter helps you target clients by past spending history, focusing on those who invest significantly in freelance services.

πŸ’‘ We recommend not setting maximum spending limits for clients, as this could exclude potentially valuable clients who have already invested substantial amounts on Upwork.

Phone Number Verified / Payment Method Verified options provide additional security and reliability indicators for client accounts.

πŸ’‘ We recommend not activating the Phone Number Verified filter as it significantly limits search results. Using the Payment Method Verified filter alone is sufficient for displaying reliable clients.

Company Size & Location

Company Size filtering allows you to target businesses based on their scale, from startups to large enterprises, helping you find clients that match your agency's preferred working style and project complexity.

Company Location helps you filter clients by their geographical location, which can be important for timezone coordination, cultural alignment, or specific market expertise.

πŸ’‘ Use the Include list for regions or countries you want to target. For example, adding the United States will show only jobs from US-based clients, while excluding specific countries will filter them out.

Job Description Language filtering ensures you only see jobs posted in languages your team can work with effectively.

πŸ’‘ Use the Include list for languages you want to see. For example, adding English will show only jobs posted in English, while excluding specific languages will filter them out.

Additional Client Filters

Additional client filters include Client Industries for targeting or avoiding specific industries, Hire History for filtering based on number of previous hires, and Client Time Zones to match jobs with your working hours for better collaboration and communication.

Hiring Preferences

Filter jobs based on client expectations to ensure alignment with your team's qualifications and capabilities.

Language Requirements

English Proficiency allows you to specify the required English language skill level that matches your team's communication abilities.

Language Proficiency lets you indicate additional languages your team speaks, expanding opportunities for projects requiring multilingual capabilities.

Hire Type & Experience Level

Hire Type determines whether clients are looking for individual freelancers, agencies, or have no preference for the type of service provider.

πŸ’‘ We recommend selecting Agency and Unspecified to improve search relevance for agency-focused opportunities.

Experience Level filters jobs based on the level of expertise clients are seeking, from entry-level to expert-level professionals.

πŸ’‘ If your agency's rates are higher than Entry level, selecting Intermediate and Expert will target more suitable opportunities.

Location Preferences

Preferred Vendor Locations helps filter by client location preferences, showing jobs from clients who prefer working with service providers from specific regions or countries.

Include Jobs without Location Preference broadens your search to include clients who don't have specific geography requirements for their projects.

ℹ️ By default, clients without location preference are hidden. Check to include them.

Extra Settings

Featured Project filtering shows premium, client-promoted jobs that often indicate higher-budget or priority projects where clients have invested additional resources to increase visibility.

ℹ️ By default, all jobs are shown. Check the box to filter only Featured jobs.

You can also Exclude Jobs with Client Questions if you prefer streamlined application processes without additional requirements or screening questions.

🎯 Best Practices for Optimizing Scanners

Successful filtering requires ongoing attention and refinement. Follow these guidelines to get the best results:

  • Regularly review and update filters based on your evolving preferences, market trends, and lessons learned from previous projects. Your filtering strategy should adapt as your agency grows and your understanding of the platform deepens.

  • Ensure filters align closely with your primary goals, whether targeting specific job types, payment schemes, or client requirements. Each filter should serve a clear purpose in helping you find ideal opportunities.

  • Test different filter configurations to find the ideal balance between relevance and diversity of job search results. Remember that overly restrictive filters might cause you to miss valuable opportunities, while too broad filters can overwhelm you with irrelevant results.
